In case no one’s told you lately...

You can have the life you want.

But, let me warn you, the minute you commit to this belief, you are going to be asked on the regular to grow, expand and change.

When you hold the belief that “I can have the life I want”, life hears you and supports you, but things don’t always come in the package that we’re expecting.

  • We want a successful business, but instead we have 3 years of struggle before we hit our stride. In retrospect we realize we learned a ton of valuable lessons about how NOT to run a business and are better because of the hard years.

  • We think we want to get back to the size and shape we were in our early 20s, but instead find new ways to love and accept ourselves, and realize that we’re actually happier now.

  • We want to be the “perfect mom”, but notice that the moments that challenge us the most are also showing us our growth edge. They give us something to explore within ourselves, which teaches our kids that we’re all human and are committed to doing better.

  • We think we want life to be smooth sailing all the time, but realize that the bumpy moments — and even the really, really hard moments — make us grow, do better, and also appreciate the good times all the more.

You can have the life you want. I believe truly and fully believe this, but I’m also learning to leave room for life to teach me, expand me and know better than me. For the messy stuff that I used to try to avoid.

I used to think (and still sometimes do) that if things weren’t going the way I pictured in my mind, it meant I was off track. Now, I’m stepping into the idea that when things aren’t going the way I planned inside my own head, it probably means that I’m being redirected in a better and brighter direction. Even if that’s hard to see right now.

I hadn’t planned to be educating myself on racial equity, speaking out about Black Lives Matter and learning about Systemic Racism in our country. But here I am, embracing this lesson life is presenting to all of us right now and doing my best to learn and grow and do better.

“You can have the life you want” is a centering thought I come back to when my mind (or the world) seems to be spiraling out of control. It grounds me in my truth, brings me back to this moment, and asks me what I can do right now - today - to move toward that life I want for me, my family, my community, our country and the world.
