LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

Today I am so excited to share my interview with Kat McLead. Kat is the creator of Stay-at-Home-Mom Entrepreneur, the proven system for nailing your business niche, standing out in a crowded market place, and landing paying clients while working 2 hours a day. She started my first Real Life Business years ago, and learned through lots of mistakes. Eventually she fine tuned her approach across 3 successful Real Life Businesses and over 7 figures in revenue. Now, she’s teaching other moms how they can create a successful business while still being a present mama. She’s a mom, a wife, and a true champion of the 3-Day Workweek philosophy!

We had such an awesome conversation. Kat has such an interesting story, and the arch of her journey is not linear at all. She actually started off in the fetish industry, and has since transitioned into working with stay-at-home moms. There’s a really interesting thread through all of the work that she’s done.

She has really come to see that profitable niches and consistency are the keys to success. She is open, transparent, vulnerable and a total badass, and I am so excited to introduce you to her in today’s episode.

Listen to my interview with Kat McLead to learn:

  • How her past experiences in the fetish industry have shaped her current approach to business

  • A behind-the-scenes look at Kat’s daily schedule + routine

  • Where to start when finding your own niche (and why it’s ok to change your niche as you evolve)

How I Manage My Time + Energy

The 3-Day Workweek Podcast with Cailen Ascher - 2020-01-15 - Mistakes I Wish I Hadn't Made In My Business.jpg

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

When people ask you, “how are things”? Do you ever respond with “busy”?

I know I’ve said that a time or two in the past, but not so much any more. These days I feel more flow than rush. More ease and enjoyment than chaos and stress.

Sure, there are days when the pace of life with 2 little kiddos gets to me, but I now know how to manage my energy so much better than I used to.

Perhaps you’re a mom like me, or maybe you still are working a full-time job as you try to grow your business on nights and weekends, or maybe you’re taking care of everything for everyone else all the time and feel like you don’t even have time to breathe. Wherever you are right now, I’ve got you. And, I want to share a few things that have really helped me manage my time and energy.

#1 Morning Practice

I’m an early riser, and every morning I start my day the same way -- with 10min of meditation and 10min of yoga. These practices ground me, center me and prepare me for the day. They remind me that I can find stillness and peace within myself at any moment, and it allows me to flow more with the ups and downs of the day.

If every morning you feel like you jump right into rushing, I would strongly urge you to consider how you could build in a few moments of “pause” before the day takes hold of you. Even just 2 minutes of quiet deep breathing can make a world a difference.

#2 Make Room for Growth

Personal development is a never-ending journey, and I’m actually sort of glad about that. I love learning and reading and discovering new things about myself. I know this about myself, so I bake this into my days.

I set affirmation reminders on my phone, I sign-up for non-business courses and programs, I journal and I read books that inspire me. It could be very tempting to put this stuff “on hold” for when the girls are older and I have “more time”, but instead, I choose to make the time (even if it’s just a few minutes a day) for the things that I enjoy now.

This brings richness and fulfillment to my day to day life and also makes room for growth.

#3 Say NO

If you’re in the habit of saying “yes” to stuff, I challenge you to get friendly with the word “no”. This honestly has never really been a problem for me. I’m comfortably saying no and protecting my time, but I know that many of my clients struggle with it. They say yes to volunteering at their child's school, yes to helping their friend move, yes to being the go-to for everyone. That’s exhausting!

You deserve time for you. You deserve time for your business. You deserve to honor what truly feels good -- even if that means potentially letting someone down temporarily.

#4 Get in Touch with what FEELS Good

A lot of us are going after things that we think we “should” want, achieve, do or have. But, have you actually taken the time to evaluate if you actually want those things? If going after them and having them would actually make you feel good?!

When you get in the habit of asking yourself, does this feel good? It will open up time and space and freedom in your life. You’ll realize what things are non-negotiables and what things you can let go of.

This is something that I bring myself back to daily. Whenever I’m feeling rushed or anxious, I check in with myself and see why I’m feeling that way. Am I putting too much pressure on myself to achieve a certain goal? Is the timeline I’ve laid out for something too short? Are my expectations unrealistic? And then I ask myself, what would feel good? The response is always spot on :-)

#5 Use a Model Calendar

In order to protect my energy and make sure there’s time and space for all that needs to get done, I use a Model Calendar. This is a template of my ideal week with room for all the things that need to happen for me, my family and my business.

Of course I don’t live this schedule perfectly every single week, but it gives an idea of how to make the highest and best use of my time. Having a Model Calendar is a way of honoring yourself and valuing your time, and it feels really good, too.

If you struggle with making time for your business, feel like you’re always rushing or behind and wish you could find a way to balance your life and work that feels good, you’ll love developing a Model Calendar for yourself.

If you’re a woman who’s ready to build a profitable business in part-time hours, be sure to download my 3-Day Workweek Schedule Guidebook. Inside you’ll find a detailed description of everything on my schedule so you understand precisely what I’m doing with my time and how I create freedom + fulfillment in both life and business, and extra tips and strategies to help you do the same!

The last thing I want to mention is this, please don’t be hard on yourself if you’re currently struggling to “manage it all”. You have a full life, and sometimes that can feel overwhelming.

That said, I encourage you to pick one of the things I listed above and give it a try. See how it feels to honor your time and energy a bit more -- and let me know how it goes!

Mistakes I wish I hadn’t made in my business

The 3-Day Workweek Podcast with Cailen Ascher - 2020-01-15 - Mistakes I Wish I Hadn't Made In My Business.jpg

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

You know how they say hindsight is 20/20? Well nothing makes that more blatantly obvious to me than thinking back to all the mistakes I’ve made over the years when it comes to my business.

Now first off let me just clarify, I don’t think mistakes are necessarily bad. They often bring valuable lessons that we need to learn and integrate. But, sometimes we make the same sort of mistakes again and again without learning the lesson. That’s when mistakes are painful and a waste of time.

Today I wanted to pull back the veil and share with you some of the mistakes I wish I hadn’t made in my business in the hopes of helping you course correct if you’re heading for one of them!

1. Not have a clear plan.

Ooh, this one is a doozy. I’ve noticed that we have a tendency to think that because we have a goal or a vision or a dream, it should automatically come with a plan for getting there and that we’ll be able to “figure it out”. This tripped me up for years. I had a big vision for where I wanted my business to go, but I naively assumed that I could figure it out and make a plan all on my own. What I later realized is that truly successful people learn from others and enlist support to help them craft their plans. Success leaves clues, and people who are destined to be successful look to other successful people who’ve done what they want to do to find those clues. When I finally internalized this, things shifted in a profound way for me.

Another thing that’s great about a plan is that it gives you confidence. Operating without a clear plan feels uncertain and shaky. You constantly question things. But, once you have a plan that’s endorsed by a mentor that you trust -- you’re golden :-)

2. Not having guidance.

That leads me to mistake #2 -- not giving myself permission to ask for guidance. As a type-A, “good student” type, I kept telling myself “I’m smart. I can figure this stuff out. I should be able to make this business work!”. What I didn’t realize at the time was my resistance to getting help was keeping me stuck.

I tried to grow my business all on my own for 7 years, and I made very, very little progress, even though at the time I was working full-time hours.

During those years, I made anywhere from $4,000 to $18,000 a year in my business. Not enough to live on and not enough to support the lifestyle I wanted for myself and my family.

I finally took a leap of faith and invested in a high-level coach. Within 2 months of working with her and getting a plan I could trust, I had my first 5-figure launch! $32,000 in sales!!! And, 8 months after that, I crossed the 6-figure mark. Things took off when I finally opened myself up to outside support.

3. Not honoring my time.

Time is our most valuable asset. This I know with every fiber of my being. Back when I first started my business, I didn’t understand this fully. So, I spent too much time on stuff that didn’t matter. Tweaking my website, creating graphics, scrolling social media without a clear intention, designing more and more offers and programs. But none of those things plant “money seeds” for money to come in the door now.

After having my first daughter, I immediately felt and understood the immense value of my time, and I no longer wanted to waste my precious time doing things that didn’t really move the needle in my business. I saw that healthy boundaries and getting really clear on what was worth my time and what wasn’t was essential to my long term happiness and success. That’s when I started my 3-day workweek. That’s when I invested in my first coach. That’s what my business took off.

4. Not being consistent.

Shiny object syndrome plagued me for years when I was first beginning in business, and I pivoted my business and business model a number of times. I started out in interior design then moved over to blogging about food and healthy living, then I did freelance copywriting and social media marketing, then I got certified as a yoga instructor and then finally, I found the world of coaching. Phew! It was exhausting just writing all that!

You see, I kept thinking if I could just “find the right thing”, then it would take off. What I didn’t realize is that things would take off once I focused on ONE THING and was consistent.

I truly believe that consistency is the #1 factor in success. It’s not about being the best or the brightest or the most unique. It’s about showing up again and again and again. If you do that, success becomes inevitable.

5. Not investing in what matters.

When I was first starting out, I made it my mission to spend as little money as possible when it came to my business. Which seems to make sense, right? Because I wasn’t making money yet. That seems to make sense, but in truth, keeping the purse strings tied off resulted in me floundering and making very little money for 7 years.

I realize now that the guidance, information and value I receive from investing in myself and my business always returns to me multifold. But, I get that it’s hard to trust that in the beginning. What was useful to me was reminding myself that by investing in myself I was declaring to myself, my business and the Universe that I was a woman to be taken seriously. That I was a woman who was ready and willing to receive what she needed to expand and grow.

Also, for me, I didn’t realize how out-of-integrity I felt asking people to pay me for my services when I was so reluctant to invest in services for myself!

When I began making strategic investments in coaching and guidance and support, things forever shifted for me. I no longer felt stuck in isolation. I saw that there was a path to be trusted and followed and that path would lead me to where I wanted to go.

= = = = = = = = = = =

Do any of the mistakes I made resonate with you?

If they do, please don’t beat yourself up about it. Everything we experience is of value for our personal development. But, I also don’t want you to be “stuck” in your mistakes for as long as I was! 7 years was too long!

Have Your Best Year Yet! [journaling exercise]

The 3-Day Workweek with Cailen Ascher - 2019-12-25 - The Gift of Time.jpg

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

Happy New Year!

Here we are at the beginning of a new year and new decade. Clean slate. Fresh start. Don’t you just love it?!

Family pic by barn 2019.jpg

I have some BIG plans on the horizon for 2020, and I bet you do too, which is why I wanted to bring you a fun journaling exercise today to kick off the new year right. (I just a good journal prompt!)

I’ve found that one of the best ways to set yourself up for a superb year in life + business is to take time to do some reflection, check in with your soul’s longings and ultimately make feeling ahhh-mazing non-negotiable.

I approach goal setting similarly to Danielle LaPorte, author of The Desire Map, and I let how I want to feel determine what goals I go after and how I go after them.

For example, instead of creating a course, writing a book or getting married because you think you “should”, figure out how you want to FEEL and then see if moving toward that thing will make you feel that way in the pursuit of it.

In case this idea is new to you, I’ll walk you through this process step by step so you can emerge on the other side with a clear sense of how to want 2020 to feel and exactly what you need to do, focus on and not do to feel that way :-)

Below is a mini-version of a goal setting exercise that we moved through inside Success Made Simple Academy last month. I hope it brings you as many ah-has as it did to the women inside the Academy!

Step #1 - Reflect Back

  1. What went really well in your life in 2019?

  2. What went really well in your business?

  3. What are you proud of?

  4. What did you learn?

  5. What didn’t go so well?

Step #2 - What’s Your Vision

  • Imagine your life and business 1 year from today. What do you see?

Step #3 - Find Your Feelings

  1. Reread your vision, how does that make you feel?

  2. When it comes to your business, how do you want to feel?

  3. When it comes to your finances, how do you want to feel?

  4. When it comes to your relationships, how do you want to feel?

  5. What recurring themes or words do you see? Pick 3-5 feeling words that “sing” to you.

Step #4 - Get Your Goals

  1. If 2020 were all about these words, what would you do for your business?

  2. If 2020 were all about these words, what would you do for yourself?

  3. If 2020 were all about these words, what would you do for others?

  4. Reread what you wrote down, and cross out anything that feels like an obligation.

  5. Narrow it down to 3-5 goals max. These are your feel-good goals for 2020!

Put 45min on your calendar to move through this exercise within the next 48 hours. Or better yet, grab your journal and get going now!

I promise you it will be time well spent. You’ll come away knowing exactly what your feel-good goals are for the year, and you’ll feel so fulfilled and happy working towards them.

Here’s to a beautiful and abundant 2020!

The gift of time <3

The 3-Day Workweek with Cailen Ascher - 2019-12-25 - The Gift of Time.jpg

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

Merry Christmas!

No matter what or how you celebrate this time of year, I want you to know that I’m sending you so much love and gratitude today.

I feel immensely grateful to be able to do the work that I do, and it’s because of your support that this life is possible for me and my family. Thank you! Really and truly, thank you. <3

If there is one thing that I wish for you today and always, it’s the gift of time.

Time to be with the people you love.
Time to do the things you enjoy.
Time to pursue your passions.
Time for self-care.
Time for rest.
Time for play and fun.
Time for connection.
Time for silence.
Time for whatever your heart desires!

Time is our most valuable asset and too often we put the things we really want on the back burner, saying to ourselves “someday” I’ll do that/create that/go there/start.

What if we stopped waiting for the timing to be right or the calendar to open up and simply gave ourselves permission to make time for the things we want most right now.

What would you make time for right now if you stopped waiting for “someday” and simply started living your best life today? Would you make time for your business? Your health? Your interest in knitting or archery or watercolor painting? Playing more with your kids or fur babies? Traveling? Meditation?

There’s no right or wrong answer here of course. This is simply a loving appeal to start honoring your deepest desires instead of putting them on hold.

Please give yourself the gift of time for the things that matter most to you. I promise your life will expand beautifully to accommodate it.

Happy Holidays!

P.S. I’m hosting a *free* Masterclass for entrepreneurs in their 1st year of business on January 7th. I'll share how to go from your first high-end client to $5K months in your business while honoring your TIME, lifestyle and family. Click here to save your seat.

3 Blocks to Release Before 2020

The 3-Day Workweek with Cailen Ascher - 2019-12-18 - 3 Blocks to Release Before 2020.jpg

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE:

I recently did a poll in the 3-Day Workweek Facebook Group asking what is your #1 biggest block to getting help with your business.

3 reasons showed up again and again.

With a new year and new decade just around the corner, I thought it would be useful to share these with you in case they’re standing in your way as well.

Once we shine the light of awareness on the stuff that’s holding us back, it’s so much easier to move beyond it -- and that’s exactly what I wish for you! I want you to be free of all the garbage and limitations that are currently standing in the way of you having a thriving business.

Let’s dive into the 3 things that are keeping you from getting the help you need to grow your business…

1. MONEY

Yes, you guessed right. Money is the #1 thing that the women of my community listed as the reason for not getting the help they need to grow their business. I totally get that, especially if you’re new in business it can be hard to justify spending money on a program or a coach if you’re not bringing anything in at the moment. I think it’s sort of interesting that with most other areas of our lives that matter to us, we can warm up to the idea of investing in ourselves. For example, if you wanted to learn how to horseback ride, you’d find and work with a riding coach, you wouldn’t just chase down a horse and climb on its back and hope for the best. Or, if you wanted to learn to fly a plane, you’d invest in a training program and work with a skilled mentor. You certainly would never consider just trying to figure it out on your own! Yet, with our businesses for some reason we think we can just solopreneur it all the way to success. That wasn’t the case for me, and it’s not what the talented women I work with have done. The fastest way to money is to learn from someone who knows how to make it! Also, if you’re hoping clients will pay you handsomely for your services, but you’re not willing to invest in your own education and growth, it can feel a little misaligned. Just sayin’.

2. TIME

I don’t know if it’s the right time.
I’m really busy right now.
Maybe in a few months I’ll be ready.

You’ll never have “more time” and you’ll never be “more ready” than you are right now, you’ll just be 6 months or 6 years years further down the road and have a heck of a lot more regret. Successful people don’t wait until they’re “ready” or when the timing is “perfect” -- that’s just procrastination. People who create massive success start. That’s it! They simply start. They stop pushing their dreams off until “someday”. Someday is not a date on the calendar. I know how scary it can be to think about dedicating time and energy (and money) to something that offers you no guarantee, but hopefully this will ease your worries just a bit. Failure doesn’t happen to you -- it’s something you decide for yourself. Failure only occurs when you decide to give up. If you instead think, “What can I learn from this? How can I do it better or differently next time?” it’s all good! That momentary setback becomes just a valuable lesson on your path to success.

3. BELIEF

Ahhhh….belief. This is where it all starts -- in your head. Start noticing the things you’re saying to yourself about your ability to be successful, and you’ll soon realize if your current mindset is  a friend or a foe. What we think day in and day out becomes our reality, so if you’re constantly thinking, “I don’t know how to do this. I’m a fraud. I’ll never be successful.” Poof! That is your reality. If instead you start warming up to the idea that you actually could rock this business and start saying things like “I’m learning more every day. I’m going to keep going until I get there. I trust the path will unfold just as it’s supposed to,” a whole new world will open up for you. Seriously.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

So there you have it, the 3 biggest blocks that are standing in the way of success. Notice which one feels most relatable to you, and give yourself some grace around it. You don’t need to solve it today, but bringing awareness to your limiting patterns will really help as you enter 2020.

Also, I wanted to let you know I’m hosting a special *free* Masterclass on January 7th at 2pm ET, and it’s specifically for entrepreneurs in their 1st year of business. Here’s what you can look forward to...

She told us how she started organically, gained momentum, then intentionally focused on slow and steady growth because she had small children when starting out -- the true definition of lifestyle design! And now 10 years into her business, she’s an author, speaker, podcast host, and has created an amazing global community for professional organizers to connect with one another. Her business has grown and flourished in some really amazing ways.

  • A year-by-year breakdown of Laurie’s decade of entrepreneurship

  • How she stumbled upon Professional Organizing and turned it into a career

  • The investments she made early in her business to set herself up for success
